What are flat cable ferrites?

Flat cable ferrites are made from the ceramic material ferrite and are used to eliminate noise on flat cables, such as flat ribbon cables. Ferrite cores help to prevent electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, which can otherwise cause problems for low-level signals.

Ferrite cores are employed to reduce the slew rate of current spikes or voltage surges by absorbing the transient energy rather than reflecting or diverting it to other components or subsystems. Ferrite cores are effective in slowing down the rapid rising of electrostatic discharge current spikes or voltage surges in cables. Ferrite cores are used to suppress electromagnetic emissions by blocking low-frequency noise and absorbing high-frequency noise. This avoids electromagnetic interference.

WE-FLAT flat ferrite cores from Würth Elektronik provide an easy solution to filter interference on ribbon cable. Their core material is NiZn for wideband noise suppression (~1 MHz - 1 GHz).

They are available in three different shapes, and have an operating temperature of -25° C to +125° C.

Laird ferrite cable cores are designed to clean common mode noise (signal) generated from either a signal line or power cable. Laird offers various sizes and materials of ribbon core with excellent common mode and differential mode EMI suppression on ribbon cable ferrite and wire assemblies at broadband and low frequency range.

Ferroxcube offers Planar E Core parts, made from press tooling. This gives the advantage of radiused corners and edges. It also means that clamp recesses can be incorporated. Planar magnetic offer an attractive alternative to conventional core shapes when a low profile of magnetic devices is required. Basically, this is a construction method of inductive components whose windings are fabricated using printed circuit tracks or copper stampings separated by insulating sheets or constructed from multilayer circuit boards. Planar device can be constructed as standalone components or integrated into a multilayer mother board with slots for the ferrite E-core.
